The best VR headsets for iPhone users

Because iOS users can join the big VR party too

The great VR headset revolution is well and truly underway and just because you own an iPhone rather than an Android smartphone doesn't mean you can't get involved in the virtual reality action in 2017.
An Apple VR headset doesn't exist (yet), so Google Cardboard has stolen a lot of the limelight when it comes to mobile virtual reality while Google Daydream is impressing in its early days. But many of the new breed of super-cheap headsets (apart from Daydream View) are iPhone compatible, and support most handsets from the last couple of years, from the iPhone 5S to the new iPhone 7.

While mobile VR headsets obviously have nothing on the likes of the HTC ViveOculus Rift or PlayStation VR, Cardboard-style sets have the chance to encourage large numbers of potential users to get on board with virtual reality. Apps wise, you can access Cardboard apps, YouTube 360, Facebook's 360 videos and more. So what better place to start than with one of these iPhone-friendly headsets?

Google Cardboard

A quick and low cost entry into virtual reality doesn't come much cheaper than an iPhone compatible Cardboard kit. Available for under $10 you get a strap and NFC technology that powers up the app on demand.
They're a bit fiddly to make and they're going to fall apart after a while, but there's no easier way to jump into VR.

Carl Zeiss VR One GX

Most mobile VR headsets are simply a plastic case and a couple of lenses – hence the logic behind the super cheap Cardboard style devices. So Carl Zeiss' experience in making lenses puts it high on our list. The newest model, the VR One GX, goes one better than the original headset by adding a magnetic control that attaches to the side and lets you interact with the app.
However, there's no head strap, and if you're an iPhone 7 Plus owner then you'll need the bigger VR One Plus instead. Also note that the headset sometimes isn't sold with the right tray for your handset – so make sure you get one.

View-Master DLX VR

Mattel's second View-Master mobile VR headset was the first to actually be sold in Apple stores but is has since disappeared. But you can still pick it up from other places. The DLX VR has a redesigned smartphone mount to work with more sizes of iPhone, as well as Android, headphone support and upgraded lenses from the first attempt.
The best bit? It's modelled on the iconic View-Master design with slightly more of a modern twist for this second edition. Coming soon.

There is huge potential for Virtual Reality in eSports

There is huge potential for Virtual Reality in eSports

Virtual reality has fast become an international sensation. The overall investments from game companies going into eSports is huge.

Imagine the possibilities virtual reality has to offer  eSport viewers. Imagine placing on the VR headset and being a part of the game without a need to be in the crowd. The viewer able to see and experience action in the game even better than the pro player. The spectator able to see what the pro player sees and more. The spectator can switch between pro players and see what all the players sees, watching what each pro is looking at and what he is doing. This is the same for the game itself; imagine if you placed on your VR headset and you could be able to cycle between different players, in games like Dota 2, Overwatch, League of Legends or Counter Strike, switching between the action so you can watch what you wanted to watch live.

VR headsets are cheap and can even made from cardboard and two inexpensive lenses and a smart phone. VR could, and I believe it will, take eSport viewing to whole new level. And that is just from the audience perspective. Once eSport Pro Players start usign VR technology to immerse themselves deeper into these competitive games it will take the esport pro circuit to whole new standard of gameplay.

eSport competitive first person games like Overwatch and Counterstike will most likely lead the VR immersion trend, because FPS lends it self to the VR experience point of view. eSport games like Hearthstone will not really benefit from the VR experience because it is essentially a 2D card game.
Watch this space. A revolution in gaming has already begun.

STAR CITIZEN & VIRTUAL REALITY: WHAT MIGHT THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE?

Opinionated Discussion

In the second episode of our new discussion series, Mark and I look at virtual reality and what it could add to Star Citizen, how both might develop together, and how we see VR tech evolving.

The Star Citizen on The DK2
So at the moment VR isn’t natively supported by Star Citizen but there are a few way to bodge it to work. The most usable & less buggy at the moment imo being VorpX which emulates the the VR / 3d wrapping & gives you a variety of options & features to make the experience more enjoyable or at least user friendly. I’ll link to all the appropriate settings in the description for anyone that is interested in giving it a try. And if it looks like I am talking in the video behind well I am recording this audio over it as it was half and hour of me saying… oooooh that’s pretty.
